Tatrzanski National Park (Tatrzanski Park Narodowy; abbr. TPN) was created in 1955. It covers the Tatra Mountains, which is the highest range of the Central Carpathian Mountains. The Tatras are subdivided into High Tatras (Tatry Wysokie) and Western Tatras (Tatry Zachodnie). The Tatra Mountains are one of the areas of Poland included on the World Biosphere Reserves list. The landscape contains sharply edged, majestic mountain peaks. The highest peak within the park is Rysy (2,499 m AMSL). Another well-known peak is Kasprowy Wierch, which offers excellent skiing conditions. The park features about 550 discovered caves, of which Wielka Sniezna cave is the biggest (814 m in depth, about 20 km in length). The Tatras were shaped by the glaciers, hence numerous post-glacial depressions, U-shaped valleys, hanging valleys, moraines and picturesque post-glacial lakes, such as Morskie Oko (Eye of the Sea, 34.5 ha), Wielki Staw Polski (the Great Polish Pond, with a depth of 79.3 m) and Czarny Staw (Black Pond). Thanks to its natural beauty, the Park is very popular among tourist. The nearest tourist center is in Zakopane, located on the Park's border. In Zakopane, there is the museum of the Park, presenting flora, fauna and geology of the Tatra Mountains. Adjacent to the Tatrzanski National Park, is the Tatra National Park on the territory of Slovakia.
